During this series of workshops collaborating with NYC public schools, learners created their own pop-up children’s books.

Pratt Institute partnered with four NYC public schools to teach workshops in preparation for the Ezra Jack Keats Bookmaking Competition. These workshops were taught to different middle and high school groups by a group of Art Education minors in topics of our choosing, including storyboarding, character design, and pop-up paper engineering.

• Remember the steps of creating a pop-up book at a prototyping level as well as at a professional production level.

• Understand what pop-up books accomplish differently than other books.

• Experiment with pop-up paper engineering methods, ranging from simple to complex.

• Incorporate pop-ups into page designs to highlight key storytelling moments.
